Housewarming Gifts That Aren't Candles
A housewarming gift is the only gift the recipient is expected to put on display.
That is the whole difficulty. Everything else can go in a drawer. This one sits in their living room, in a home you have possibly not seen, chosen against a taste you are guessing at, and they have to look at it every day and be pleased about it.
Which is why everyone gives candles. Candles are consumable, so nothing is imposed and nothing has to be displayed for ever. It is a sound instinct, and it is also why the gift is forgotten by March.
Here is how to keep the low risk without the forgettability.
The better version of a candle

Things that do a job

That is the entire argument, and it is a better one than it sounds, because a large share of people moving into somewhere new are renting and cannot make holes in the walls. Six flat sides instead of a circle, roughly 10 to 13cm, with a piece of bread painted under the glaze — a pineapple bun, a star roll, a fason loaf. Under the glaze rather than on top means it survives the dishwasher and does not fade.
Microwave safe, so the pastry gets reheated on the plate it is eaten from. Four designs, sold individually, and they are different enough that a set of four reads as collected rather than matching. The cheapest genuinely good thing on this page.
Stainless Steel Egg Ring Moulds — €15.83
Stainless rather than coated aluminium, which is the difference between a kitchen gadget that lasts and one that flakes. Small, cheap, used.
Small enough not to impose
If you want to give an object rather than a tool, keep it small. A 13cm sculpture can be moved to a shelf, a hallway or an office. A large piece has to be dealt with.

The lowest-risk decorative object we sell, and the one to pick if you genuinely do not know their taste.
It is the Scandinavian end of decorative sculpture: a simplified human form, no features, no ornament, one uninterrupted finish letting the silhouette do the work. Because there is no detail to date it, it does not belong to a trend and will not look wrong in three years. Three finishes that sit in different registers — gold reads warm and slightly classical, silver cooler and more contemporary, sandstone matte and quiet.
Sandstone is the safe choice if you are guessing.
Hardwood Fish Fridge Magnets — from €34.31
Each fish is cut from a timber chosen to match its actual markings. A ranchu goldfish in purple heart, because the wood is naturally that colour. A glass catfish in black walnut. A moonlight fish in cherry. Nothing stained, nothing printed — the pattern on the fish is the grain of the wood it came from.
Fourteen designs. Three or four across a fridge door reads as a deliberate arrangement rather than clutter, and it is one of the few gifts here that works in a home whose style you know nothing about, because a fridge door is nobody's carefully composed surface.
Grain varies naturally, so the one that arrives will not exactly match the photograph.

If you actually know their taste
Different rules apply. If you have seen the flat and you know what they like, the interesting things are on the table.

If they are renting
Worth thinking about separately, because most housewarming guides quietly assume the person owns the place.
